School Bus Driver Aide (Special Needs Support)

About the role

The School Bus Driver Aide supports the bus driver in supervising students during transportation, with a focus on medically fragile and special‑needs children. The aide ensures safe loading, unloading, and use of equipment while providing a caring environment on the bus.

Key responsibilities

• Operate wheelchair lifts, tie‑downs, and other equipment to secure students safely.
• Assist the driver in monitoring and providing specialized care for medically fragile students.
• Observe student behavior to maintain a safe bus environment.
• Administer first aid and medication as directed.
• Guide students in proper loading, unloading, and use of safety equipment.
• Participate in meetings and training sessions to stay informed.
• Prepare documentation related to student behavior and incidents.

Required profile

• Prior experience working with special‑needs or medically fragile students is preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of child development principles.
• Physical ability to sit for extended periods, reach, handle equipment, and maintain visual and auditory acuity.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and follow all regulations.

Required skills

• Basic American Sign Language (certificate required).

What we offer

• Positions are a minimum of 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, for the 183‑day school year.
• Salary schedule placement credit for up to two years of prior experience, with entry up to step three.
