Teaching and Learning Director – Secondary

About the role

The Director of Teaching and Learning for the Middle and Senior sections plays a central role in raising the quality of education across the school. The role focuses on strengthening pedagogy through professional development, literacy provision, and high‑quality feedback, ensuring that teaching is research‑informed and meets the diverse needs of learners.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for teaching and learning, aligning initiatives with the school’s vision and academic priorities.
• Plan and deliver section‑wide CPD programmes and coordinate INSET days and workshop weeks.
• Ensure consistency of teaching quality across departments and year groups, monitoring marking and feedback standards.
• Observe lessons, give developmental feedback, mentor early‑career teachers and those needing support.
• Facilitate professional learning communities and instructional coaching cycles.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to design and review curriculum, ensuring progression, coherence and alignment.
• Lead learning walks, observations and departmental reviews, evaluating the impact of teaching initiatives.
• Share findings and recommendations with the Senior Leadership Team.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in secondary education with a proven track record of instructional leadership.
• Strong analytical and reflective practice to monitor and improve teaching quality.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with senior leaders, department heads and teachers.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable learning environment.
