Backend Software Engineer II – Payments

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Backend Software Engineer II to join the Payments & Blockchain team at Kraken, part of Payward. You will help design and build the core services that move digital and fiat dollars in and out of our platform, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and libraries for payments integration across Kraken products.
• Write clean, reusable, and testable code in a systems language such as Rust or Node/TypeScript.
• Collaborate with product, design, and frontend engineering to deliver seamless feature integrations.
• Debug and resolve issues across the full stack, including operating system, network, and application layers.
• Work closely with crypto‑native engineers to align payment flows with blockchain requirements.

Required profile

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong security‑first mindset when designing systems.
• Ability to work autonomously and troubleshoot complex distributed‑system problems.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Rust or Node.js/TypeScript for backend development.
• Experience with distributed systems, RPC protocols, Kafka, and event‑driven architectures.
• Familiarity with OS‑level and network debugging.
