Tailings and Mine Waste Leader, LATAM

About the role

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Tailings and Mine Waste Leader based in Lima, Peru. The role combines technical leadership with business development responsibilities, driving growth and positioning AECOM as a leader in tailings and mine waste management across Peru and LATAM. The successful candidate will work closely with clients, mentor staff and lead strategic initiatives to expand the market presence in the tailings sector.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a strategic vision for the tailings dam practice in Peru and LATAM, aligned with AECOM's global goals.
• Lead the design, analysis and construction oversight of tailings dams, embankments and associated infrastructure, and perform the Lead Verifier quality review on AECOM deliverables.
• Prepare and review technical reports, drawings and specifications, and ensure projects meet regulatory requirements, industry best practices and sustainability goals.
• Identify and pursue new business opportunities, build client relationships, lead proposal development and represent AECOM at industry events.
• Mentor and train junior and intermediate engineers, and coordinate with the North America tailings practice.
• Stay updated on regulatory frameworks and advocate for best practices in industry associations and regulatory bodies.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering, focused on tailings dam design and management, or equivalent experience and education.
• Demonstrated success in business development, client relationship management and proposal preparation.
• Preferred: 15+ years in tailings-related geotechnical engineering, Master's or Ph.D., experience with mine waste management, closure design and water management, and strong knowledge of Canadian regulatory frameworks (GISTM, CDA, ICMM, MAC).
• Ability to communicate in English and Spanish is an advantage.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of geotechnical principles, tailings dam design and risk management.
• Leadership of multidisciplinary teams and mentoring of junior staff.
• Preferred: experience as an Engineer of Record for tailings dam projects, familiarity with advanced numerical modeling software, and strong project management skills.
