Wildlife Veterinarian

About the role

This full‑time Wildlife Veterinarian position is based on‑site at the Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center (RAREC) in Iquitos. The role focuses on providing medical care, diagnostics, and treatment for a wide range of rainforest species, including injured, orphaned and rehabilitating animals, while also supporting education initiatives for veterinary students.

Key responsibilities

• Perform clinical examinations and routine health checks on diverse tropical species.
• Administer medications, conduct surgeries, and manage anesthesia procedures.
• Develop and implement treatment and rehabilitation plans for individual animals.
• Maintain accurate and detailed medical records in compliance with biosecurity protocols.
• Train and mentor veterinary students on a daily basis.
• Collaborate with caretakers, researchers, volunteers and local communities.
• Respond to emergency calls and work flexible schedules in a remote, resource‑limited environment.

Required profile

• Licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) with experience in wildlife, exotic or zoological medicine.
• Strong knowledge of rainforest and tropical species health, diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia and rehabilitation.
• Proven experience in field, sanctuary or rescue settings with solid clinical decision‑making skills.
• Ability to maintain detailed records, follow biosecurity standards and uphold animal welfare ethics.
• Excellent collaboration skills and willingness to work with diverse stakeholders.
• Physical capacity for fieldwork, including lifting and safe handling of wildlife.
• Proficiency in Spanish and English, or willingness to learn Spanish.
• Previous experience in Latin America, rainforest ecosystems or non‑profit conservation projects is an advantage.
