About the role
The Town of Spencer is seeking a full‑time Animal Control Officer to enforce state and local animal control laws, respond to public complaints, and help keep the community safe.
Key responsibilities
- Investigate complaints about barking dogs, dog bites, aggressive or dangerous dogs, and animal cruelty or neglect.
- Respond to reports of injured animals and provide appropriate care.
- Manage stray animals and owner‑released pets housed at the municipal kennel.
- Conduct investigations and make recommendations for problem animals, working with police and fire departments during emergencies.
- Prepare and present dangerous or nuisance‑dog hearings before the Board of Selectmen.
- Enforce dog licensing laws, issue fines when necessary, and maintain accurate records.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and pet safety.
Required profile
- Experience working with animals, especially dogs.
- Animal Control Certification or ability to obtain it within six months of hire, with annual renewal.
- Valid Class D driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Physical agility and strength to work in inclement weather and handle emergency calls 24/7.
