Instrumentation & Control Designer

About the role

The Instrumentation & Control Designer will perform control‑systems and instrumentation design activities for mining and metals projects. You will prepare and review design drawings, 2D/3D models, technical documents and material requisitions, ensuring compliance with Bechtel procedures, standards and applicable codes.

Key responsibilities

• Apply established control‑systems and instrumentation design methods, standards and codes to assigned project work.
• Prepare 2D design drawings and portions of 3D models using approved CAD applications (MicroStation, AutoCAD).
• Develop and maintain I/O lists, instrument schedules, control‑system block diagrams, architecture drawings, cabinet layouts and interconnection diagrams.
• Review P&ID drawings to confirm instrumentation, control and interface requirements.
• Support instrument and control‑valve selection by preparing data sheets, schedules and material requisition documentation.
• Coordinate design activities with engineers, designers, suppliers, construction personnel and client representatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) with 5‑8 years of relevant experience, or 9‑12 years of experience without a degree.
• Intermediate English proficiency and clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and provide technical guidance to less‑experienced designers.

Required skills

• Control‑systems and instrumentation design for industrial/mining projects.
• Proficiency with 2D CAD tools (MicroStation, AutoCAD) and basic 3D modeling.
• Knowledge of industry codes, standards and Bechtel design procedures.
• Experience preparing I/O lists, instrument schedules, block diagrams, cabinet layouts and material take‑offs.
• Familiarity with Smart Instrumentation, Smart 3D software, and BIM/integrated 3D design.
• Understanding of industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Profibus‑DP, Foundation Fieldbus).
• Experience with OT networks, fiber‑optic infrastructure, CCTV, access control and cybersecurity requirements.
• Participation in factory acceptance tests or system interoperability testing.
