Engineering Manager, AI Engineering: Chat

About the role

GitLab is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Duo Chat team, responsible for the core AI capabilities that power GitLab Duo Chat. The manager will guide a cross‑functional group of frontend, backend and AI engineers to deliver AI‑driven product experiences across the DevSecOps lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of experienced frontend, backend and AI engineers, setting clear direction and removing blockers.
• Partner with product and UX teams to define requirements and ship AI features that improve answer quality and customer productivity.
• Participate in technical architecture, focusing on scalability, reliability, performance and maintainability of AI agents.
• Drive testing, observability and test‑coverage improvements for AI‑powered chat workflows.
• Manage roadmap execution, track milestones and ensure timely delivery of commitments.
• Coach engineers through feedback, mentorship and career development.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing software engineering teams that include frontend, backend and AI specialists.
• Strong engineering judgment with hands‑on involvement in technical decisions.
• Ability to translate product needs into reliable, high‑quality AI features.
• Excellent collaboration skills with product, UX and cross‑functional partners.
