Senior PHP / WordPress Backend & Automation Developer

About the role

A U.S.-based membership platform is looking for an experienced Senior PHP / WordPress Backend & Automation Developer to join its remote team. The role combines backend development, custom plugin development, API integrations and no-code/low-code automation, working closely with the Head of Development. It suits a proactive, independent developer who uses AI tools effectively and thrives in a remote setting.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance backend functionality for WordPress membership platforms using custom PHP and plugins.
• Build and customize applications in Invision Community (IPS), including backend logic, integrations and database functions.
• Design and maintain API integrations connecting more than 30 third-party tools and services.
• Write and optimize batch scripts for bulk operations, data processing and system maintenance.
• Create and improve automated workflows with Zapier, Make and other no-code/low-code platforms.
• Troubleshoot backend bugs caused by plugin updates, vendor changes and technical debt, and monitor platform stability, security and performance.
• Manage priorities, coordinate with support teams and vendors, and give regular progress updates.
• Use AI coding assistants to speed up development while reviewing and validating the code.

Required profile

• Senior-level PHP experience, with strong WordPress backend and plugin development.
• Experience with IPS and custom API integrations.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities and communicate in a remote, chat-based environment.
• Minimum B2 English, with effective written and verbal communication.

Required skills

• PHP, WordPress, MySQL/MariaDB, Git and version control.
• Batch scripts, no-code/low-code tools (Zapier, Make, ActiveCampaign).
• HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery basics.
• AI/LLM proficiency for prompting, coding and debugging.
• Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), Memberium, PHPUnit, Stripe API, SSH, Linux, Apache/nginx, ClickUp.
