System Software Engineer – GCC/LLVM Compiler & Tooling

About the role

Canonical is looking for a System Software Engineer to lead the development of GCC and LLVM compilers, runtimes and tooling on Ubuntu. You will work remotely within the Americas region, collaborating with a distributed team to bring modern C and C++ innovations to Ubuntu users.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate proactively with a distributed team to design, integrate and package best-of-breed GCC/LLVM tooling for Ubuntu.
• Write high-quality C/C++ code to add new features, debug issues and improve performance of the compiler toolchains.
• Review code and design contributions from peers and mentor less-senior engineers.
• Participate in code and design reviews, and work with other Ubuntu teams to ensure architecture decisions enhance the overall experience.
• Travel internationally 2-4 weeks per year for internal and external events.

Required profile

• Proven experience with GCC or LLVM, preferably in cloud-native or Linux environments.
• Experience packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu.
• Long-time Linux user with a strong academic record and a technical undergraduate degree (or equivalent experience).
• Passion for open-source, curiosity, flexibility and accountability.
